Mr. Moffett's Biography

J. Denny Moffett

Mr. Moffett currently practices law in Jackson, Wyoming and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mr. Moffett practiced from 1974 until 1991 with one of the largest firms in the South Central United States. At the time of his departure, he was a senior partner. In 1991, Mr. Moffett was a co-founder of McKenzie, Moffett, Elias & Books, P.C. with offices in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Since the dissolution of that firm in 1998, Mr. Moffett has practiced in Jackson, Wyoming and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

CLIENT REPRESENTATION

In over thirty-five (35) years of practicing law, Mr. Moffett has represented a broad range of clients including individuals, trusts, financial institutions, sole proprietorships and multinational corporations. Clients have been drawn from the energy, manufacturing, securities, banking, retail, professional services and other industries including foreign entities. The following matters are illustrative of cases handled by Mr. Moffett: 

    - representation of corporate plaintiff in insurance coverage and bad-faith litigation resulting in $14,000,000 settlement; 

    - representation of First Interstate Bank of Jackson Hole in general commercial matters; 

    - multiple appointments by the District Court of Teton County, Wyoming as a Special Master in complex litigation; 

    - representation of medical professional in case involving bad-faith denial of disability insurance benefits resulting in multi-million dollar settlement; 

    - representation of estate and trust beneficiaries in will contest and proceedings seeking removal of Trustee resulting in dissolution of trusts and multi-million dollar settlement; 

    - representation as General Counsel to Trustee in only Security Investor Protection Corporation liquidation of a broker-dealer, In Re Fitzgerald, DeArman & Roberts, Inc., U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Oklahoma; 

    - representation of W. R. Grace & Co. in a series of tax cases resulting in the Oklahoma Supreme Court redefining Oklahoma property tax laws; 

    - representation as Co-Counsel to Trustee in one of the largest bankruptcies in U.S. history (as of filing), In Re Nucorp Energy, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of California; and 

    - representation as General Counsel to debtor-in-possession and Trustee in insolvency and reorganization of the world's largest manufacturer of workover drilling rigs, In Re Cooper Manufacturing Corp. and its Affiliates, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Oklahoma.

PROFESSIONAL AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

Mr. Moffett has served the legal profession and the community in a broad variety of activities, including service as a legislative assistant in the United States Senate, President and Vice-President of the Teton County Bar Association, Wyoming; an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa Law School, Chairman of the Tax Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association; an Arbitrator for the National Association of Securities Dealers and The American Arbitration Association, and has served as an officer or board member of various charitable institutions. Mr. Moffett is the author of numerous articles in legal journals and is a frequent lecturer to legal and professional groups. The subjects of his publications and lectures include litigation, contracts, oil and gas transactions, oil shale development, taxation and business formation, bankruptcy and reorganization and insurance law. He is listed in Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
